Built-in vs Free Standing Dishwashers

One of the most hated chores is doing the dishes; almost no one enjoys washing the dishes; it is a long and tedious task. However, thanks to the invention of the dishwasher, the need to do this chore is almost eradicated. A dishwasher can be a great addition to a kitchen, the question is whether to go for a built-in dishwasher or a free-standing dishwasher; let’s explore.

Built-In Dishwashers

A built-in dishwasher like the range from Toshiba Lifestyle Online or, as it is sometimes referred to as an integrated dishwasher, is, as you might have guessed, built into your kitchen. Although, for the most part, it will look like just another cupboard, it makes integrating a dishwasher into your kitchen aesthetic much more seamless. They can either be fully or semi-built-in, depending on your preference and your budget.

Free-standing Dishwashers

A free-standing dishwasher then should be fairly self-explanatory. It is an additional kitchen appliance that is not integrated into your kitchen design or hidden behind cabinet drawers. There are a number of different finishes to choose from, so you can find a free-standing dishwasher that suits the rest of your kitchen design despite not originally being incorporated into it.

Choosing Between the Two

Now that you are aware of the differences between a built-in and a free-standing dishwasher, it is time to start thinking about the differences between the two and how you can choose between them. Realistically there isn’t much difference between the two in terms of function, although there are a few distinguishing features to consider.

Obviously, the biggest difference between the two is their design and style of them. Some people prefer built-in dishwashers because they don’t interrupt the look or flow of the kitchen. That being said, you can choose a finish on your free-standing dishwasher, which contributes to the style of the kitchen and becomes a feature in its own right.

The differing features are another element to consider. Some built-in dishwashers are more advanced with additional features and special cycles. Free-standing dishwashers also get the job done, but they might not have the same level of additional features. Load capacity often goes hand-in-hand with the size of the dishwasher, with bigger dishwashers having a larger capacity. You are limited by the size of your cabinets if you choose a built-in model. Free-standing models can range more in size.

The next element to consider is the versatility and convenience of the dishwasher. Integrated dishwashers have to be left behind when you move, but free-standing dishwashers can come with you. If you aren’t likely to move in the foreseeable, this might not be an issue. A free-standing dishwasher can provide you with more counter space. However, a built-in dishwasher doesn’t take up any more floor space.

Lastly, the expense. A free-standing dishwasher might be less expensive to purchase but depending on where you plan to put it; you might have to pay more for it to be plumbed into the mains. An integrated dishwasher can be more expensive simply because of the trickier installation process.

So, Which is Best?

This is a hard question to answer because, in the end, it is a personal choice. Think about what would make the most sense for your home and your needs. An integrated dishwasher is tidier, takes up less space, and can increase the value of your home. On the other hand, a free-standing dishwasher can create more space, and you can take it with you if you move.
