One of the first questions I get from homeowners in Sonora, Twain Harte, and the surrounding area is: “How long is this going to take?”

It’s a fair question. A pool is a significant investment, and nobody wants their backyard torn up for longer than necessary. So I want to give you an honest answer — not the optimistic version contractors sometimes pitch to get the sale, but a realistic picture of what pool construction actually looks like in our region.

The Honest Timeline: 3 to 6 Months, Start to Finish

That’s the range for most custom gunite pool projects in Tuolumne and Calaveras County. Here’s why there’s a spread:

Permitting is the variable that most homeowners don’t think about upfront. In our county, pool permits go through the local building department and depending on the time of year and complexity of the project, that process can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 2 months. We handle all of that on our end, but real-time needs to be factored in.

Excavation and gunite typically move fast once permits are in hand — especially if your yard is reasonably accessible. Rocky ground (which is common up here) can add time to excavation, but we assess it during the site visit before we ever commit to a timeline.

Finish work — tile, plaster, coping, decking — is where a lot of the visual transformation happens, and it takes time to do well. Rushing the finish phase is how you end up with cracking plaster and loose coping stones two years later.

Seasonal Planning Matters Out Here

Pools built in Tuolumne and Calaveras County have a real season. Most homeowners want to be swimming by Memorial Day weekend. That means if you want to swim in the summer, you should be in the design and permitting phase by January at the latest — ideally before the holidays.

I tell this to every prospective client I meet with the families who planned ahead are the ones swimming in June. The ones who called in April are usually looking at late August or even fall.
